Vietnam’s Prime Minister Calls for U.S. Market Economy Recognition and Expanded Tech Access
Vietnam’s Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh emphasized the need for the United States to officially recognize Vietnam as a market economy. Addressing a business summit on Wednesday, he noted that over 70 countries already acknowledge Vietnam’s market economy status. This recognition, he argued, would deepen bilateral trade relations and strengthen economic ties.
The Prime Minister also called on the U.S. to remove export restrictions on critical technologies. These restrictions currently limit Vietnam’s access to technologies deemed sensitive to U.S. security, including those related to chemical and biological weapons.
Strengthening Vietnam-U.S. Trade and Technology Relations
Vietnam has already gained approval to import conventional weapons and certain nuclear and missile technologies from the United States. However, Prime Minister Chinh highlighted Vietnam’s aspirations to advance satellite communications. He revealed ongoing discussions with U.S. aerospace giant SpaceX, a move that could boost Vietnam’s position in the space and telecommunications industries.
Encouraging Investment and Economic Growth
Prime Minister Chinh shared Vietnam’s positive foreign investment outlook for 2024, forecasting inflows of approximately $25 billion. These investments underscore Vietnam’s growing appeal as a regional economic hub and its commitment to fostering an investor-friendly climate.
Vietnam’s push for market economy recognition and access to advanced technology from the U.S. reflects the nation’s ambition to bolster economic growth while enhancing trade and technological collaboration.
